guys...
I stuck a new song on my myspace called Primate
I wrote this specifically for my drummer - the phenomenal Craig Blundell
he wanted a showcase track full of interesting time signatures...
so I wrote him this...
enjoy!!! _________________

Superb. And absolutely my kind of thing!
That is a lesson in how to do progressive grunge metal (although the shortcomings of labels for music are all too apparent here)!!
These days (amongst other things) I'm the bass player for the alternative rock outfit "This Devastated Fan" but the guys in the band are like me in that they have such a wide taste, and we tend to make a 'Tour bus top 10 tunes of the month' which always has some bizarre and eclectic (but always high quality) stuff on it. I've every faith that "Primate" is going to be on March or April's list it as soon as I have a version of it that can be played in the tour bus!! |

yaaaayyy......
I'm really glad you guys like it...
the name comes from:
prime = as in prime numbers
eight
most of the unconventional time sigs are prime numbers over 8
hence... Primate...
the trancey intro is in 17/8
from there I really mix it all up using combinations of stuff...
there's a very subtle one in there that most folks may not spot...
at 1:03, there is a guitar solo on the neck pup...
on the surface it's pretty standard rock stuff...
but only the drums and lead guitar are in 4/4
the riffing and bass guitars are in 17/8 at the same time as the drums and lead guitar play in 4/4..
it makes the riff really hard to play.... lol...
so the riff is basically two bars of 4/4 with an extra 1/8
which is why it gets offset with the 4/4 drums more and more as it plays through..
I really like the effect though and plan to do more of this sort of thing in the future _________________

Speaking ofwhich I've finally managed to get hold of Meshuggah's I EP, its absolutely brutal and complex. It's about time someone added some melodic interest the realm of cross rhythmic riffing!
I listened to Primate (congrats on the hugely geeky title Paul!) again having rea your last post and couldn't feel the intro 17/8 even when I tried to count the 4/4 and 9/8 you stated. Stangely though when i just listened my foot locked into feeling the 17 as 7/8 and 5/4. It's interesting how we all feel things differently. _________________ "Put them in the Iron Maiden.."

I really like Meshuggah, but only for about 15 minutes at a time..
after a short while they lose my interest..
for me there is not enough going on beyond the relentless riffing..
what they do sounds really cool... but their's not enough variety for me..

the 17/8 intro is sub-divided into: 7/8 7/8 3/8 _________________
