Starting this month, I'm going to be doing a series of video lessons/demonstrations of how to build phrasing skills on guitar. I'm sure Mr Clark himself won't mind me posting here and mentioning this. They are all going to be free, and available via my blog and hopefully my (irritatingly not online yet) website:

If I were trying to sell stuff, yes. that would be shameless.
I'm pointing people in the direction of my online stuff which is all free!
What's wrong with that? |

the videos didn't work.... doh !!
I agree though that phrasing is a very important art...
I try little experiments like:
create a very simple little lick..
just 1 bar long
start the lick on bear 1
then start it on the 2nd quaver
then on beat 2
then on the 4th quaver
and so on
it's really interesting how this little lick will take on whole new accents and stresses simply by shifting it along the bar
and also interesting how this simple little lick can suddenly become a real handful in various places too..
I sometimes mess with this to trigger new ideas... _________________

I managed to watch your phrasing videos oon youtube (as well as others.) and really enjoyed them, I love exercises like those, to try and make music within very strict boundaries, it forces you to come up with new things. _________________ "Put them in the Iron Maiden.."

I did take it in the spirit in which it was intended. A couple of liberally placed smilies from me maybe could have helped with that one. Words on a screen are devoid of nuance and expression so I'm sorry if that came out a little bit stand-offish....
Thanks again for all the kind words...
I don't know why the videos aren't working, it took me long enough to get them on there!!!! I'll take a look at it.... |

I got around to seeing the 2 vids....
really nice...
you have a really nice way of getting the point across
and being musical of a very simple idea
very interesting
I do something similar from time to time by placing constraints on myself
I think sometimes, the limitations imposed force you to be more creative..
have you tried the idea I suggested above by having a simple lick and displacing it by a quaver
that too can yield some interesting effects..
it's one of the things I mess around with when doing "theme and variations" exercises...
some of these I do by displacing the lick diatonically within the key
essentially playing the same series of notes a degree higher in the same key..
this generates new intervalic spacings because obviously the intervals between the notes of a scale are note all equal...
and I do the time displacement thing which seriously messes with the accents
and then there are the serialist treatments to the lick:
retrograde
inversion
retrograde inversion
but I do these step wise within the same key..
in the end I find that my simple one bar lick will spawn tons of new ideas..
and I'll have a jolly ol' time noodling around with this stuff for hours..
I know it all seems a little formulaic
but it can create licks that I simply wouldn't have thought of...
some will be crap...
and others will raise an eyebrow _________________

Yes! I have tried it, and it's an excellent exercise. It's one of my favorites. I actually use it an an exercise with 6 notes. Use 4 different notes to devise a 6 note riff (or lick), then displace it.
It can yield some very interesting results. I think the main riff for "Aliens and Lasers" came about by doing that. The track that's on my myspace is a very early demo "jam track" type version of it, but the main riff and main chord progressions remain the same in the curent form that it's in with the proper melody.
I really should get some new music online. The stuff I've got online is getting bloody old now! |

me too....
all my myspace stuff has been up there for yonks
thing is... all the stuff I've been working on over the last 8 months is for various albums.. so I don't completely own any of it and cant put it up...
when I'm back from tour though I'll be throwing myself into the Syberian stuff.. so hopefully there will be a new song coming in the summer _________________

maybe you should consider:
where to ask better questions... lol...
cos I agree...
a formal academic institution is often very set and structured...
a great place to learn the rules....
not always the best place to learn how to bend and break them
unless of course you have a lecturuer that is still an active musician...
I think that one of the problems with music teachers
is that they turn into teachers... _________________

I think that's where I was actually quite lucky.
I learned from people who were 'out there'. Teaching, but actively playing and doing real gigs, and I didn't just learn music, I also learned how to teach and remain open minded. How to be a musician and 'share it' rather than 'teach it'. That way it all stays real. |
