It's quality stuff when these kind of people are being discussed and appreciated.... |
It could only be the Clarky forum...
Another vocal work that I'm enjoying at the moment is O magnum Mysterium by Morten Laudidsen. It makes the hair stand on end when we sing it well in the college choir. Here's version if you want to check it out:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o4rWl_ZxqNA&feature=fvw
It's not the best recording, but it has some nice photos! |
what an absolutely beautiful piece of music
truly wonderful
today in the car they played Schubert's unfinished symph on the radio...
not heard it for years...
a true masterpiece
I studied this one in detail at uni when we were looking at sonata form
once I understood it, it's amazingness was magnified yet further _________________

I must investigate that at some point. Right now though I feel like I'm eating, sleeping, breathing the Rite of Spring, in preperation for a massive chunk of arrangement work for my course's performance module.... (think ELP's Pictures, but with low B's ) _________________ "Put them in the Iron Maiden.."

I remember doing Rite of Spring
very cool... I think the only thing missing in the orchestration is a 7 string guitar and double kick drums... lol....
whilst we're in 'classical mode', I called my uncle [Dr Stephen Preston] today - just to say hi, happy new year and general chat etc - and as usual, we ended up in very interesting music chats..
our chats always seem to spend the first 30 secs on family stuff and the next hours on music... lmao...
but that's what you get for phoning a music professor...
he used to teach at Trinity, Guild Hall and the Royal Academy and is a world famous Baroque Flautist..
so when his lil' hairy shredder nephew calls it's only a matter of time before we end up talking notes and stuff... lmao
we had a really interesting chat about Bach suites and fugues and ornamentation and stuff and about how musicologists over the centuries have tried to 'correct transcription errors'...
jeez... he's a clever bar steward...
monster player too... _________________

Unfortunatly, most of my relatives know nothing about music, and I tend to avoid conversations about music with my mum [pro pianist and teacher] as we just end up arguing over aesthetics.
Thinking of music rediscovered, I pulled out my copy of Rick Wakeman's Henry VIII's wifes, unfortunately I didn't enjoy it as much I remember doing on it's previous spin. It all seems a little wanky and drawn out in my opinion.. _________________ "Put them in the Iron Maiden.."

the thing a lot of muso's forget is that music is first and foremost an art form..
the academia simply provides us with the vocabulary to talk about the things we hear..
and the technique stuff simply provides us with the tools to express our creativity and / or interpretation
creating music from the science alone sucks
creating music as a means to display technique alone sucks equally
creating and performing music as a delivery mechanism for emotional content hits the spot........
my uncle absolutely advocates this too and always talks of people in the classical world that get hung up on some detail whilst missing the point of the entire piece.... or get hung up in executing the music to perfection.. to the point where the soul in the music has been well and truly executed... lol...
funny how sometimes you go back to something you once loved and think..
"jeez.... that ain't so great..."
times change... your taste and ear evolves...
and also... some music is absolutely a product of it's time..
in some cases listening back leaves you breathless cos you know you're listening to something amazing that'll only sound dated because of the technology used to record it..
other cases are like "oh my god... and I raved about this shite for years.."

I printed out the score to clavier concerto no 1 in Dm
the plan is to try to mess with it and turn it into something I can play 'lekky guitar / shredder stylie
and having looked through the score - having not yet attempted to play any of it I'm like
"holy crap this looks really hard in places" _________________

At least with Bach, you're in relatively safe harmonic hands. With the Stravinski arrangement studying and getting familar with the harmonnies and polychords have given me a headache for the best part of 2/3 months. Starting to really come together now - quite excited! _________________ "Put them in the Iron Maiden.."

I was talking to my uncle and he's going to did you some Bach flute stuff..
I'm quite looking forward to getting my hands on that...
but for now I'm prepping for the tour, so I'm gonna have a crack at the concerto when I get back in March _________________

I pulled out Frank Zappa's One Size Fits All album last week while I was off sick. I'd liked Inca Roads for a long time but took the time to appreciate the rest of it's offerings and this time around I 'got' it and have been listening it it alot since.
Any other Frank Zappa fans on here? _________________ "Put them in the Iron Maiden.."

I dont know why, but Zappa never really did it for me...

I think part of what appeals to me is that he has such a handle on the traditional American song style, and then just bastardizes it completely, like What's New In Baltimore etc. _________________ "Put them in the Iron Maiden.."
